Defence Industries Limited Walking Tour
Stephen White & Mitchell Daniels
In celebration of Jane’s Walk, discover the early years of Ajax on a walking tour that showcases the Town's wartime history.
Defence Industries Limited (DIL) was a giant munitions plant that operated in the heart of what is now Ajax through WWII, from 1941 to 1945. It employed more than 9,000 staff and produced over 40 million shells, making it at one time the largest munitions plant in the British Empire. Discover the history of Ajax by visiting the sites of DIL buildings, both vanished and those still standing, and learn about the lives of the Bomb Girls, who came from across Canada to live and work in this town-that-was-a-plant!
