Late night food scene in North York Centre
David
North York Centre is one of the few late night food neighbourhoods in Toronto. Yonge Street between Sheppard and Steeles Avenue is lined with Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Persian eateries. Many stay open past 10 pm.
In this walk, we'll look at the urban forces that shaped the food scene here. Why the concentration along Yonge St? Why just East Asian and Persian food? How did we end up with three Korean corndog stalls in one block? It's a story sixty years in the making.
This walk is just as much about food as it is about urbanism. We'll explore a corner of Yonge and Byng where new restaurants sprout up, stop by a controversial food hall, and find out what's good to eat in the area. Participants are encouraged to share their own experiences. Which restaurants would you recommend and why?
The walk ends at Finch station. If you're hungry, you can backtrack to the restaurants along the route or continue north for Korean street food and a 24h Persian supermarket.
