Creating a New Park: West Scarborough Rail Trail

Misha Perozak

Come and explore this raw and little-known trail and see parts of Scarborough from a perspective very few have seen. All residents of Toronto are invited to join the Scarborough Junction Community’s Jane’s Walk on the proposed West Scarborough Rail Trail.

This trail follows the Hydro corridor and abandoned rail lines connecting to the Meadoway.

The walk starts and finishes at Hilltop Community Centre (25 Mendelssohn St, Scarborough, ON M1L 0G6. Parking at Warden Hilltop CC or the North Parking Lot of Warden Subway Station.) First proposed more than 50 years ago by University of Toronto students, the West Scarborough Rail Trail has garnered renewed interest from Scarborough Junction Community members due to an increase in planned and proposed development in the area.

The community will see an influx of more than 50,000 new residents in the next few years and they will need a place to recreate, relax and connect in natural surroundings. The Scarborough Junction Community’s vision for the trail includes a multi-use pedestrian and cycling trail featuring native plants and trees that connects surrounding neighbourhoods to new and existing parks, playgrounds, pollinator gardens, public transit, commercial destinations, the Meadoway, the WW2 GECO Bomb Girls factory, an historic cemetery and more.

Four walks of different distances will be offered to accommodate all levels of hiker: 1. Family Walk – 1 km hike/30min. 2. Novice Walk – 3 km/45 min. from Warden Hilltop to Birchmount Rd. and back. 3. Beginner Walk – 5 km/60 min. from Warden Hilltop to Kennedy Subway Station and back 4. Intermediate Walk – 8 km/90 min. from Warden Hilltop C.C. to the Meadoway and back.

See you there!
